Change Your Fork Oil
- Put your KLX on a stand
- Remove bars and let hang over tank
- Loosen bolts on top triple clamps -- triple clamp pressure can bind the fork cap.
- Loosen large hex cap on top of fork (mm) until it starts clicking, not coming any further up.
- Remove front wheel
- Loosen lower pinch bolts, but leave them snug to hold fork leg in the clamps
- Put a tie down on lower part of fork leg to compress it all the way up and push cap and spring out the top.
- Use a thin open-end wrench to hold lock nut on push rod, then loosen cap with your socket.
- Let push rod fall into the fork leg.
- Remove the spring.
- Loosen upper and lower pinch bolts on triple clamps and slide the fork leg out.
- Dump oil into a container -- if it looks contaminated, flush forks with kerosene or ATF
- Measure the oil you poured into a container
- Put that amount of 5W oil back into leg
- Work the push rod gently up and down to work all the air out of the fork leg.
- Compress the fork leg and measure oil level -- should be about 95mm from top of fork leg.
- Reinstall the fork spring
- Use an open end wrench slid between the coils to hold rod up while screwing fork cap back onto rod.
- Reverse the steps to put everything back together again.
- Do the same thing with the other leg.
